County Commissioner' Blog
1st March - ‘90 days in...'
I am not sure what I was expecting having taken over as County Commissioner, it hasn’t as yet been the baptism of fire I dreaded. In part this is due to the support I have been given by very many people within the County Executive and County Team, a big Thank You to them.
The County Team met on January 24th where we reformed the structure of the county, drew up a County vision and began to formulate the manner in which we are to deliver the national objectives across the county.
The County Structure is now arranged into four distinct areas.
-
Training, led by the County Training Manager Lyn Richardson, this team will deliver all adult training in the county, the way in which this is to be delivered is changing to meet the needs of our leaders within the county. Lyn will also be responsible for a number of other areas; An Awards Panel who will oversee award applications from districts ensuring our applications become processed effectively to ensure our leaders become rightly rewarded. The County Appointments Advisory Committee who will be busy in the coming months recruiting to the County Team in the form of District Commissioners and other County Level Staff, Lyn also has The County Child Protection CoOrdinator as part of her team.
-
Development, led by Jackie Price as Deputy County Commissioner for Development. Jackie is responsible for development within the county by leading a team who will work closely with the Regional Development Service and the County Development Officer – Simon Cuthbert. Jackie will also be hoping to develop District Development Leaders to build on the District Development Plans to increase our membership and support base. Jackie also has the Media Development Manager within the team together with ‘the Webmaster’

This team will be responsible for the support of the delivery of our programme and activities within Districts. The roles of Assistant County Commissioners for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network Scouts together with ACC for Activities and all activity advisors will come within this team. Also within this team are D of E advisors, International, Fellowship, Special Needs and County Young Leader Advisor.

Admin and Finance, This team is basically the County Executive led by John Porter our County Chairman, this county executive has a number of sub committees which include; Finance Sub Committee led by Denis Evans MBE. Appointments Advisory Committee, mentioned above within the Training area, this committee are responsible to the County Executive but ‘line managed’ by Lyn Richardson & the Headquarters Management Sub Committee led by Jack Bickley.
You will see our county vision at the top of the HomePage but to reiterate, Our County promises to support and develop, inclusive and relevant scouting to enable Young People to have self-belief and achieve their personal goals.
We, the county, aim to assist groups and districts to achieve that promise by providing support, guidance and direction.
I have recently had to report on the progress we are making toward the national objectives. In some areas we are doing well, in others we need more work, take a look below and let me know how and where we can measure up to these challenges.
Supporting a Growing Movement – Increasing youth membership and Retaining & Increasing the number of adult volunteers.
Celebrating a Youth Led Movement – Increased youth involvement in the decision making process.
Building a sound Movement – Successful fund raising and business planning coupled with strong district and group committees
.
Renewing our Commitment to Diversity – Locally and Nationally Scouting aims to reflect the make-up of our communities.
Becoming a More Relevant Movement – By not being afraid to change to stay relevant to the society of today but retaining our core values.
Becoming a More Focussed Movement – To increase scouting profile at local level, to implement new marketing strategies
